The Sudan Open Learning Organization (SOLO) provides distance education to thousands of East African refugees to Sudan and displaced Sudanese nationals. Sudan, itself, is one of the three poorest countries in the world is host to political and religious refugees of surrounding countries.
SOLO provides distance education to the residents of the camps via battery operated cassette recorders and printed matter. The residents learn English as an important means of improving their lot it life.
What am I doing for the refugees in Sudan?
- I flew to Sudan to assist the Director of SOLO in her attempt to improve the system.
- I have sent leisure reading materials to the camp so that parents can improve their reading skills so that they can teach their children to read.
What can you do to help the refugees in Sudan? - Mail leisure reading materials directly to the camps (US Mail Surface or Library Rate is cheapest).
- Find books and magazines for leisure adult reading
- Reader's Digest, Reader's Digest Condensed Novels, Romance Novels, Ideals Magazines, Poetry, Mysteries
- Wrap them in plastic bags placed in heavy duty boxes
